Title: Alienated
Author: Melissa Landers
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Pages: 344
Publication date: February 4th 2015
My rating: 4/ 5 stars
Synopsis:
Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.
Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.
Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.
But when Cara's classmates get swept up by anti-L'eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn't safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara's locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.
Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she's fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet. (taken from goodreads)

Review:
I remember having bought this when my love for books had originally formed. I had seen a booktube video where someone hauled this book and I was at that part where you barely own 5 books and all you want to do is grow your collection. So you go crazy and start buying all the books that you see people haul with your most common excuse being "That cover is pretty. I must have this."
Then months went by and the book remained unread. Until a few weeks ago when I realized that the sequel's publication date was getting closer. Not to mention I had a craving for some sci-fi. So picked the book up, I was a tad apprehensive at first because when books get a lot of hype I get scared of not enjoying them as much as everyone else. Luckily, this book was amazing and I fell in love with every turn of every page.
I actually didn't know much about what the book was about, prior to reading it. I mean, I knew it was sci-fi, I just didn't know that it was about a freaking alien exchange student. To a sci-fi fan like me, that sounds like pure bliss.
As soon as I read the first chapter, I knew I was going to really like the main character. Cara was a very strong lead female character. I loved her personality and how she was so funny and snarky when she had to. She wasn't the only simpatico character, though. Aelyx, the love interest (and ALIEN!) was oh-so-swoon-worthy. Although, I wasn't sure wether to like him at first due to some things. After a little while, I simply couldn't resist his charm. Overall, the characters were extremely well-written and believable.
It's safe to say that Melissa Landers is a very talented author. I say this because when it comes to sci-fi, it can sometimes be difficult to get invested in the story fairly quickly. Landers, however, did an impeccable job at world building, let alone writing. Every aspect of the story really together and nothing felt out of place. Also, the pacing was perfect; it didn't feel rushed nor did it drag on.
Going a little bit more into details (don't worry, no spoilers here!), I found it so cool how Cara was a blogger! Hehe I get so giddy when character's in books are bloggers. Like I said, Cara was a very likable character. Another thing I liked and found very funny was how Aelyx cursed. They had alien words for everything and I found that really intriguing.
I really loved this book and story. I wanted to be a part of it haha. I can't wait to go further into the story with the second book. Also, mad respect to those who read this when it came out. Waiting for that sequel must have been terrible!

This book sounds like a heartwarming story! Do you request your arcs from publishers? Any advice for someone starting up in the book review world?

ReplyDeleteI always request arcs through Netgalley or Edelweiss instead of asking publishers directly. Since I am a fairly new blogger I don't get approved for many of my requests. I haven't contacted contacted publishers directly because, like I said, I'm a fairly new blogger and my follower count isn't impressive. Which is extremely important to publishers. Since they do get a limited amount of arcs they have to give them to those they think will reach a greater audience. In the meantime I'll just do my best at writing better content and such and hopefully get more people to read my reviews! 😄
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked Alienated! I haven't read it yet but it does sound like a good sci-fi novel. I hope you enjoy the sequel just as much :)
ReplyDeleteI hope so too! :)
DeleteI've never read a book about an alien before. Sounds interesting. :)
ReplyDeleteGive this one a try! I don't think you'll regret it :)
DeleteI definitely agree with you on Cara. I connected to her really well when I read this, which is why my enjoyment level definitely increased! I love how she was able to stand her ground in multiple situations.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you like it! I too think that Melissa rocks. I haven't picked up the second one because of time, but I want to! It looks like such a great time.
This is a wonderful review, hehe <33
Same here! Time hasn't been on my side lately :/ And I really want to get to it soon.
DeleteThank you! :)
